'The Marvels' box office $21.5M on opening day

"The Marvels" the 33rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is facing challenges at the box office.

Variety reports a disappointing $21.5 million Friday performance notably lower than previous MCU movies.

Despite a substantial budget of $220 million the film is projected to generate only $47-52 million for its opening weekend marking a potential record low for MCU debuts.

The projected opening weekend figures for "The Marvels" fall below the debut of the 2008 film "The Incredible Hulk" which previously held the record for the lowest MCU opening weekend.

Despite dominating this weekend's box office "The Marvels" struggles to surpass the performance of its MCU predecessors.

"The Marvels" faces tough competition from other films including Martin Scorsese's "Killers of The Flower Moon" and the successful "Five Nights At Freddy’s," which has maintained the No. 1 spot for two consecutive weekends with a domestic gross of $118.2 million.

Despite the underwhelming performance "The Marvels" might contribute to the recovery of the domestic box office, which experienced a slump the previous weekend.

The delay of "Dune: Part Two" to 2024 contributed to a lackluster box office performance last week, with only $63 million generated.
