'Mean Girls' trailer: The Musical Reimagined

Audiences will have the chance to return to North Shore High School as the movie musical adaptation of "Mean Girls" is set to be released in theaters.

The first trailer for the movie, releasing on January 12, 2024, introduced the new generation of Plastics.

Angourie Rice plays Cady Heron, who befriends Regina George (Renée Rapp), Karen Smith (Avantika) and Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood).

This new "Mean Girls" film is based on the 2018 Broadway stage musical, which in turn was adapted from the 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams.

Surprisingly, the trailer does not emphasize that the film is a musical despite the presence of Renée Rapp, who reprised her role from the Broadway production, which received 12 Tony Award nominations.

Fans and media outlets expressed confusion and disappointment over the lack of musical references in the trailer.

Many questioned why the songs weren't highlighted given that it's a musical.

Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the 2004 film as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, respectively.

New additions to the cast include Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps and Jon Hamm.
