Carly Russell admitted she didn't see a child wandering the side of a highway and lied about abducting her, a lawyer said Monday.

Hoover Police Chief Nicholas C. Dergis read a statement made by Russell's attorney during a news conference.

The 25-year-old nursing student said she was not abducted.

When she went missing on July 13, the country was convinced. Russell said that he had not left the Hoover area.

She returned home 49 hours after calling 911 to report an interstate child sighting.

"My client apologizes to the community, to the volunteers who searched for her, to the Hoover Police Department and other agencies," the statement said.

"The police department is consulting with the district attorney's office regarding possible criminal charges," according to the source.

Hoover police said Russell called 911 just after 9:30 p.m. to report seeing a child on Interstate 459 South.
