Ryan Gosling Voices Disappointment Over Oscar Snub for Barbie Director and Star

Ryan Gosling expressed his disappointment that director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie were not nominated in major Oscar categories for their work on the Barbie movie. Despite receiving a nod for his supporting role as Ken, Gosling described his feelings as an “understatement” and emphasized that their work should be recognized alongside other deserving nominees. Gerwig, though not nominated for best director received a nod for best adapted screenplay with her husband Noah Baumbach. Robbie missed out on a best actress nomination but was recognized for best picture as a producer.

Gosling conveyed his happiness for co-star America Ferrera, who earned a nomination for best supporting actress for her role in the film. In an interview, Ferrera expressed her disappointment for Robbie and Gerwig, praising Robbie’s incredible achievements as an actress and Gerwig’s outstanding work as a director.

In a statement, Gosling shared that he was honored to be nominated, highlighting his pride in portraying a plastic doll named Ken. He acknowledged that there is no Ken without Barbie and no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who are most responsible for the history-making film. Gosling celebrated their contributions, noting how they made audiences laugh, broke hearts, pushed the culture and made history against all odds.

The statement followed Mark Ronson a British record producer, championing Gerwig and Robbie for their roles in bringing Barbie to life. Ronson, nominated for an Oscar for best original song, emphasized that there is no “just Ken, it’s Barbie AND Ken.” He credited Robbie for putting the project together and praised Gerwig for drawing people back to the movies in droves.

The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
