Netflix Calls Time on ‘Shadow and Bone’: Grishaverse Series Ends After Two Seasons
Netflix has decided to halt the journey through the Grishaverse as they’ve canceled “Shadow and Bone” after its two-season run as reported by Deadline. The series an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s works, won’t be continuing despite hints from the team about possible expansions beyond the main storyline during the second season’s premiere.
Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) and Mal Oretsev’s (Archie Renaux) fate now rests solely within the pages of the novels that served as the foundation for the television adaptation as Netflix’s decision puts an end to their on-screen portrayal.
The show, comprising two seasons each with eight episodes successfully brought the characters of the Grishaverse from the novels to screens worldwide. It delved into Alina’s journey as she was chosen to confront the Fold navigating terrifying creatures residing within this ominous space. The narrative also centered around the pursuit by The Darkling (Ben Barnes) a Shadow Summoner aiming to cast the universe into darkness.
Despite initial positive signs and talks of potential spinoffs particularly one centered on the Six of Crows, the cancellation comes as a surprise. The showrunner, Eric Heisserer, had solid reasons to consider expanding the franchise especially after the second season’s strong debut. Netflix reported a significant viewership with 55 million households tuning in around its release time. However, these numbers didn’t meet the studio’s criteria for proceeding with either a third season or a spinoff.
For fans, all episodes of “Shadow & Bone” are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
