Modernizing Espionage and Marriage: Amazon’s ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Series Review

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s captivating chemistry in the original “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” delighted audiences, combining romance and action seamlessly. The film explored the idea of a married couple discovering each other’s spy identities, hinting at how marriage can lead to personal transformations and the wearing of disguises even in intimate relationships.

Amazon’s new series, produced by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, puts a fresh spin on the concept. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” introduces John (Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) as new recruits for the espionage agency, The Company, deviating from the film’s timeline. The couple, initially expecting individual assignments, finds themselves partnered up for high-stakes missions.

The show, while maintaining the contrasts between John and Jane seen in the film delves deeper into their characters’ complexities. It explores themes of committed relationships, portraying a morbid romcom intertwined with a John Wick-like action-fantasy set in a world full of undercover assassins. Notably, the series also addresses the dynamics of an interracial couple navigating their identities within and outside their marriage.

Unlike the film’s emphasis on changing spy identities the series navigates between genres, seamlessly shifting from comedy to action to drama. This adaptation skillfully modernizes the quintessential elements of the 2006 film for today’s audience.

While “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” sometimes faces challenges, especially in addressing racial and socio-economic tensions, the show manages to balance its tone. The presence of guest stars such as Parker Posey, Michaela Coel, and Ron Perlman adds depth to the story.

The first season available on Amazon Prime, impresses with its production quality and leaves a sense of finality, possibly making it a standalone series. Despite minor shortcomings, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” feels like a successful reinterpretation, skillfully blending familiar elements with a fresh perspective. The cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, John Turturro, Eiza González, Sharon Horgan and Paul Dano.
