With the recent historic nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, Lily Gladstone is now one step closer to a significant win on Oscars night for her remarkable performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” A member of the Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu heritage, Gladstone has made history by becoming the first Native American actress to receive an Oscar nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, marking the fourth time an Indigenous actress has ever been nominated in this category.

In “Killers of the Flower Moon” Gladstone portrays the real-life figure Mollie Kyle alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in a crime drama set in 1920s Oklahoma. The film revolves around the murders of Osage tribe members committed by white men aiming to steal oil rights.

Earlier this month Lily Gladstone achieved another milestone by making Golden Globes history as the first Indigenous actor to win the Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama category. During the acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to “every little rez kid” and spoke Blackfeet, emphasizing the significance of representation for Native children.

The late composer Robbie Robertson associated with “Killers of the Flower Moon” also received a historic nomination for Original Score, becoming the first Indigenous person to be recognized in this category. The film received a total of 10 Oscar nominations, including Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Song and Costume.

Born in Montana and raised in the Blackfeet Nation, Gladstone began her film career with a debut in Arnaud Desplechin’s 2013 drama “Jimmy P.” She gained further recognition with Indie Spirit and Gotham Award nominations for her role in Kelly Reichart’s 2016 drama “Certain Women.”

In his Golden Globes acceptance speech, Gladstone expressed his gratitude for the historic win, saying, “[T]his is for every little racialized kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid who has a dream, who has a dream, who has America.
