June Carter Cash: A Documentary Journey Through Country Music History

News about ‘June’ Trailer

The forthcoming Paramount+ documentary “June” is set to chronicle the life and legacy of June Carter Cash, a significant figure in country music history and the second wife of Johnny Cash.

Scheduled for streaming release on Jan. 16, the trailer released recently offers glimpses of archival footage and introduces the A-list personalities contributing to the documentary directed by Emmy-winning documentarian Kristen Vaurio. The central question posed by the film is “Who is June Carter Cash?” considering her extensive achievements while often residing in the shadow of her husband’s fame.

The teaser begins with country singer Kacey Musgraves pondering, “Who is June Carter Cash? Well, she’s a formidable individual first and foremost.”

The documentary delves into Carter Cash’s musical journey, tracing her roots performing in her family’s Americana group, The Carters to her collaboration with Johnny Cash, notably co-writing his hit song “Ring of Fire.”

The trailer also revisits the story of how June and Johnny Cash met including an old video featuring Carter Cash narrating the tale. It follows their marriage, which endured from 1968 until their passing in 2003.

Familiar faces such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Dunn, Larry Gatlin, Robert Duvall (her co-star in the 1997 film “The Apostle”) and Reese Witherspoon (who portrayed her in “Walk the Line”) contribute intimate insights into her life. The documentary promises never-before-seen archival material from her career, including her acting endeavors, and rare interviews with the late star.

The documentary’s tagline, “June Carter Cash was a legend hiding in plain sight. Don’t miss the story of talent, ambition, heartbreak and loyalty,” encapsulates the essence of her journey.

Despite her collaborative work with Johnny Cash, June also had a thriving solo career with achievements predating their marriage. Her solo albums, two of which won Grammys her induction into the Christian Music Hall of Fame posthumously in 2009 and her enduring influence on women in country music highlight her individual impact.

“June” premieres on Paramount+ on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
