Nicole Kidman’s character Margaret in the upcoming Prime Video series “Expats” expresses a desire for solitude, separate from the roles of a wife or a mother and devoid of being defined by tragedy. Directed by Lulu Wang and based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel “The Expatriates,” the six-part series features Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo, Brian Tee and Jack Huston alongside Kidman.

Set against the backdrop of a vibrant yet tumultuous 2014 Hong Kong, “Expats” follows the intersecting lives of three American women—Margaret, Hilary and Mercy—connected by an unexpected family tragedy. The series delves into themes of privilege, blurring the distinction between victimhood and responsibility. Tee portrays Margaret’s husband Clarke, while Huston plays Hilary’s husband David.

Wang serves as the creator, director and writer of “Expats,” also taking on the role of executive producer alongside Daniele Melia for Local Time. Kidman, joined by Per Saari for Blossom Films, acts as an executive producer. Alice Bell, the initial writer onboarded for the series, Theresa Park for Per Capita Productions, and Stan Wlodkowski, among others, also serve as executive producers. Writers Vera Miao, Gursimran Sandhu, and Lee, in addition to Bell and Wang, contributed to the series.

The series premieres with two episodes on January 26, followed by weekly releases leading up to the finale on February 23, exclusively on Prime Video.
